Before joining Sony Pictures Imageworks, Kwan worked at Rainmaker Entertainment (now Mainframe Studios) in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he served in roles ranging from lead animator to senior animator. During this period, his credits included Escape from Planet Earth (2013) and Ratchet & Clank (2016), as well as extensive work on animated television and direct-to-video projects. Earlier in his career, he also worked as a CG artist on television promotions and commercials.

Kwan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Calgary and later pursued specialised training in 3D Animation at Vancouver Film School. He has cited a lifelong interest in drawing, science fiction cinema, Japanese manga, and anime as formative influences. He has noted that seeing A Bug's Life (1998) was a pivotal moment that led him to pursue 3D animation professionally. Among the films he has identified as personal favourites are Aliens (1986), Jurassic Park (1993), and The Matrix (1999).
