In a handful of deliberately and gently dark films, screenwriter and director Pascal Bonitzer has built a body of work that is both fierce and gentle. His characters practice ironic antipathy and take quiet steps to make themselves known, but they also display great and disarming frankness and a desire that is completely free of the need for others.
