Kim Ju-hui started as a commercial South Korean director and sometime actor focusing on melodramas and comedies. In the early 90's he switched to making sexploitation films in order to compete with imported CAT III and pinku films coming into the country. This was lucrative enough that he eventually retired from film directing and purchased at least four "back alley" theatres in Daehangno where he was a prominent producer of erotic plays, even as they were being cracked down upon in the 90's.
