The film draws its references from the world of splatter horror that reigned on the shelves of video rental stores in the 1980s, a style of cinema in which the visual aesthetics of violence and blood were combined with absurdities such as serial killers wearing masks and hatchets and the living dead ripping out their victims' guts.
