This is based on Fredrik Backman's absolutely brilliant and touching novel A Man Called Ove, and is also a remake of the 2015 Swedish film that earned two Oscar nominations. Of course, the movie is just a shadow of the novel; no adaptation could capture everything Backman achieves on the page. But the writers and director Marc Forster did a very decent job of paring the story down to essential plot and successfully transplanting it to America, finding the universality in Backman's grumpy Swedish widower.
