The principled young Jesse James (Audie Murphy) and his brother Frank (Richard Long) are disgusted by the lawlessness they are seeing during the US Civil war and so together with three of their friends, they set off to join the raiders commanded by Col. Quantrill (Brian Donlevy) and whose substantial force of marauders is causing no end of trouble to the Yankee army.
